How to give an agency access to your Google Ads

Leo Agostini

By Leo Agostini, 13 years in marketing. Updated .

Never share your password. In Google Ads, the agency sends a link request from its manager account and you accept it under Admin, Access and security, Managers, without giving it ownership. Analytics, Tag Manager, Search Console and Business Profile each get an email invitation with a limited role. You keep ownership, billing and the right to remove access at any time.

  • Ownership of any account

Open Managers in Google Ads(opens in a new tab)
  1. 1Send me your Google Ads customer ID (the 10-digit number at the top of your account). I send a link request from my manager account, 426-226-5974.
  2. 2Sign in to Google Ads and go to Admin, then Access and security, then the Managers tab.
  3. 3Under the link request, open Actions and choose Accept. The invitation email also has an Accept request button.
  4. 4Do not give the manager account ownership. Without it, I manage campaigns but cannot change who has access to your account.
Access to choose

What stays with you

Don’t have a Google Ads account yet?

Create it yourself, in your name, with your own payment method, and then link it as above. An account created by an agency inside its own setup can be hard to take with you later. If you are starting from zero, I walk you through creating it on a call. The same goes for Meta.

Questions owners ask

Does the agency need my Google password?
No, and you should never share it. Google Ads links to the agency’s manager account, and every other tool invites the agency by email with its own access level.
Who pays Google when an agency manages the account?
Whoever owns the payments profile on the account. Linking a manager account doesn’t change that. Your card stays on your account as long as you don’t move billing to the agency.
What does ownership mean in a manager link?
A manager account with ownership can also change who has access to your account. Without it, the agency can run your campaigns but can’t add or remove users. Keep ownership with you.
How do I remove the agency later?
In Google Ads, go to Admin, Access and security, Managers, and unlink the manager account. In the other tools, remove the user from the same screen where you added it. Your campaigns and history stay in your account.

Working with me?

These are the exact steps my clients follow after signing. It takes about 15 minutes, and I can walk you through it on a call.
